When liposuction first exploded in popularity several years ago, it was a frequent topic for television news and talk shows. However, as is often the case, many of these shows focused on the negative: stories about people who had unwanted complications during the early years when the technique was in its infancy.

In addition, the sight of a rather large tube sucking fat out of a hole in the body of an unconscious patient was hardly attractive. Even when the results were excellent and the patient looked considerably slimmer and happier, many viewers were simply turned off by the procedure they had seen.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is the removal of fat from the body using hollow, blunt-tipped tubes, called cannulas, that are connected to suction, whether by a syringe or an aspirator machine. Liposuction sculpts the body by removing unwanted fat – fat that does not respond to diet and exercise – from different areas, in fact, it’s often called liposculpture for that reason. But it’s important to know that liposuction is not a substitute for healthy diet and exercise, and it is not a method for losing weight.

Why is this procedure so popular?

In a nutshell, there are certain locations on the body where diet and exercise cannot bring down that last bulge. In fact, too much exercise and too much dieting can be unhealthy, whether it’s due to stress on the joints or interference with your quality of life as you spend hours in the gym, away from your family.

Using the liposuction procedure, significant amounts of fat can be removed through a small opening in the skin.

This is usually done while patients are awake, and they can get up and go home shortly after the procedure is over.

Recuperation is rather quick, and most people can resume their work and daily activities within a few days. But you also have to remember that liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise, and you have to continue with a healthy diet and exercise program afterward to maintain your results.

In short, liposuction is popular because it is a quick, relatively painless way to remove stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be removed any other way.
